The Grechetto wine is a white grape variety, likely originating from Greece, hence the name ‘Grechetto’, and later imported to the Italian coasts. The vine has elongated, pentagonal leaves, while the bunches are small to medium-sized, with grapes that have a thin, but robust peel and a typical yellowish colour. Nowadays it is one of the most ancient Italian grape varieties, and its cultivation is especially popular in Umbria, but it can be found in other regions as well, including Lazio and Toscana.
Grechetto wine: from Greece to our peninsula
The Grechetto has been adopted throughout the entire territory of the Italian region of Umbria, where it is now considered autochthonous and among the most renowned vine varieties of the region. Here it has found the ideal soil and climate to grow. This vine variety gives rise to a white wine with precise characteristics: with good acidity and a particular sapidity, Grechetto wine is quite full-bodied and mineral.
In the region of Umbria, there are two different types of vine varieties of the same family, however with different characteristics: the Orvieto Grechetto and Todi Grechetto. The former is more complex and structured in comparison to the latter, characterized by its freshness and strong aromatic hints. The Umbrian Grechetto has become part of various DOC denominations, including Colli Martani, Orvieto, Todi, and Montefalco. As an Umbrian white wine, therefore, it lacks nothing when compared to other products

An Umbrian white wine with unlimited potential…
Due to its versatility and its particular qualities the Grechetto is one of the most popular refined wines sold by online wine shops.
On sight, it appears pale yellow with greenish hues and golden glares. The aromas of dried fruits, such as almonds and hazelnuts, immediately strike the nose followed by fruity and floral scents. In the more mature Grechetto nuances of vanilla can be perceived as well. To the palate, it appears rather persistent and intense, and depending on the type and length of aging, it can be more or less fresh and full-bodied.
Grechetto’s versatility regards even the passito, and it is no coincidence that it lends itself well to the noble rot techniques. These wines are characterized by aromas that recall honey and dried fruits, as well as figs and raisins. With its amber colour, it boasts a captivating and smooth taste, suitable for accompanying aged cheese, but also dry-based desserts.
